A key component to the Mountain Wave mission is training other SAR groups on the effective use of technology in the field. It is often more important that SAR personnel be trained in the efficient use of radios in the wilderness environment, than it is to buy more radio equipment.

Because of this, we offer several training programs to SAR organizations in basic communication skills (fulfills the communications requirements for OSSA - Oregon State Sheriff Association - SAR certification) and SAR Dispatching (several members are experienced 911 Dispatch instructors). Contact us for more information on these classes.

Class materials available to qualified SAR organizations at no charge. Request a copy.

We authored the Communications Plan (PDF) endorsed by the Mt. Hood SAR Council. We also have a Communications Log (PDF) available for download.
Mountain Wave participates in PSAR (preventitive search and rescue) activities with static display of vehicles and equipment, demonstrations, and distribution of information leaflets on backcountry safety. Here, Com1 and Com2 are shown at the popular Hillsboro Airshow in Oregon.
  • Mountain Wave is a member organization of the Mt. Hood Search & Rescue Council.

  • All members are certified with the State of Oregon for search and rescue.

  • All members are registered Emergency Service Workers with Clackamas County and the State of Oregon.

  • All members undergo our own training program (including continuing training each year) for search and rescue, communications, use of field equipment and dispatching.

  • Almost all members hold amateur radio licenses.

  • All field personnel are graduates of the American Alpine Institute's Advanced Ice Climbing course and have taught climbing and mountaineering.

  • More than half of our members are EMTs, and we also have several paramedics and a physician among the team.
